Kyle DeCoste Awarded Best Graduate Student Paper at 2019 IASPM-US

Ethnomusicology graduate student Kyle DeCoste was awarded the Best Graduate Student Paper at the 2019 International Association for the Study of Popular Music, US Branch (IASPM-US) annual meeting for his paper, “Music All Up and Down the Street: Listening to Childhood in James Baldwin’s Little Man, Little Man.” In the paper, DeCoste uses Baldwin’s “children’s book for adults” as way to re-think conceptions of childhood innocence and the role of music in mediating the realities of black children lives in Harlem.
